Crews douse house fires in West End, North Point Douglas amid frigid conditions

Winnipeg fire crews were busy extinguishing two fires one in the West End and one in North Point Douglas on Sunday in the middle of an extreme cold warning.

Winnipeg fire crews fought two fires one in the West End and one in North Point Douglas on Sunday in the middle of an extreme cold warning.

The first happenedaround 3:30 a.m. at a two-and-a-half-storey home on Toronto Street between Sargent and Notre Dame avenues in the West End, a Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service news release said.

Firefighters put out that one around 6 a.m. There were no occupants found and no injuries reported.

Crews put out another house fire in North Point Douglasafter hours of fighting the blaze in cold temperatures.

Firefighters went to a two-and-a-half-storey home on Rex Avenue, between Hallet and Grove streets, about 11:30 a.m.

All occupants safely escaped on their own and neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution, the WFPS release said. The fire was under control by about 2:30 p.m.

WFPS district chief John Senkowsky said one firefighter suffered minor injuries. He was treated on scene by paramedics.

Senkowsky said he couldn't confirm how many people lived in the house.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Senkowsky said.

WFPS said firefighters were expected to remain at the scene into the eveningto monitor for hot spots.
