Winnipeg homicides hits record high of 34

Two fatal shootings this weekend have brought Winnipeg's number of homicides this year to 34, matching the city's record high that was set in 2004.

The latest homicide took place early Sunday morning, when a man was shot at a McPhillips Street hotel parking lot.

Police say they were called to the parking lot around 4:40 a.m. CT. The man was taken to hospital, where he later died of his injures.

Meanwhile, police have identified a man who was shot early Saturday morning in Winnipeg's Exchange District as Oudy Phrakonekham, 20.

Phrakonekham was inside a Ford Explorer with several other people near Rorie Street and McDermot Avenue when he was shot from outside the vehicle around 2:30 a.m. local time.

The Ford Explorer then drove a short distance to Arthur Street, where Phrakonekham was found by police. He later died in hospital.

Phrakonekham's sister, Mal Phrakonekham, told CBC News on Sunday that her brother was a good person who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Boy in critical condition

Meanwhile, a14-year-old boy continues to fight for his life in hospital after he was shot on Saturday afternoon near Selkirk Avenue and Salter Street.

The teen was originally taken to hospital in critical condition, but police say he since been upgraded to critical but stable condition.

The police service's major crimes unit is investigating that shooting.
