Services around Winnipeg will commemorate Remembrance Day

Each year in November millions of Canadianspay tribute and collectively remember military servicemen who died fortheir country, and a number of services and ceremonies will be held around Winnipeg on Monday.

For over 100 years,the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month has been marked by solemn appreciation and a moment of silence in honour of Remembrance Day, originally called Armistice Day, commemorating the armistice agreement that ended the First World War on Nov.11, 1918, at 11 a.m.

Here are some of the services taking place in Winnipeg.You can alsocheck the Royal Canadian Legion's websiteto find a service near you.

• RBC Convention Centre(375 York Ave.)

This is the province's biggest service, which usually draws upwards of 5,000 people.Doors openat 9:30 a.m. and the public is asked to be seated by 10:30 a.m. The service begins at 10:40 a.m. Information will be posted on the centre's social media the day before Remembrance Day.

• ANAVETS(3584 Portage Ave.)

The congregation is asked to be seated by 10:30a.m., with doors opening starting at 9:30 a.m. There will be post-service entertainment startingat 12:45 p.m., which includes a light lunch.

• Minto Armoury(969 St. Matthews Ave.)

Doors open at 9 a.m. and the program runs from10:30-11:30 a.m. The museum will be open from noon until 3p.m.Admission to the museum is free, though donations are accepted.

• Vimy Ridge Park(821 Preston Ave.)

The Royal Winnipeg Rifles host this ceremony atVimy Ridge Memorial Park.Program begins at 10:30 a.m.

• St. Norbert Cemetery(Ste. Therese Avenuenext to St. Norbert Collegiate)

The St. Norbert ceremony begins at 10:45 a.m.This event is also livestreamed on their YouTube channel.

• HMCS Chippawa(1 Navy Way)

Ceremony starting at 10:30 a.m.

Ceremonies atRoyal Canadian Legions

• Charleswood Legion 100(service at Oak Park High School,820 Charleswood Rd.)

The ceremony begins at 10:25a.m.with an Afghanistan veteran being thefeatured speaker.

• Bruce Park/St. James Legion 4(service at Bruce Park,1966 Portage Ave.)

A bus will leave the branch (1755 Portage Ave.) at 9:45 a.m. to go to Bruce Park. A parade will form on Lyle Street,west of the Assiniboine GordonInn,at 10:40a.m. A march to return to the branch for a hot bowl of chiliwill take place following the ceremony.

The legionwill remain closed until the ceremony and parade are over.

• Fort Garry Legion Branch 90(762 Pembina Hwy.)

Doors open at 10 a.m. and close at 10:45 a.m.,or when seating capacity has beenreached.

• Brooklands Weston Legion(1613 Logan Ave.)

A small outdoor gathering honours veterans. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m.

• South Osborne Branch 252(426 Osborne St.)

Doors open at 10 a.m., with the service beginning at 10:45 a.m. The lounge will open after the service, with entertainment from #252 Concert Band.

• TransconaBranch 7(117 Regent Ave. E.)

A parade will take place at10a.m., from the branch down Regent Avenue to Leola Street, south on Leola to Pandora Avenue E.to East End Arena. Everyone is welcome to march in the parade.

Everyone is asked to be seated for the ceremony at East End Arena by10:30 a.m.

• Henderson Highway Branch 215 (215 Maxwell King Dr., East St. Paul)

Doors open at 10:30 a.m., with ceremony starting at 10:50 a.m.

As well, a Royal Canadian Air ForceCT-142 Dash-8 a plane used to train air crewfrom the 402 Squadron at 17 Wing Winnipeg will conduct flypasts of several Remembrance Day ceremonies:

• Royal Canadian Legion No. 4 and Bruce Park.
• Vimy Ridge Park.
• HMCS Chippawa.
• Royal Canadian Legion No. 7.
• Royal Canadian Legion No. 215.
• Oak Park High School.
