4 teens arrested after 62-year-old Winnipeg woman robbed, assaulted

Four teenage girls are being charged with robbery after a woman was robbed and attacked in downtown Winnipeg overthe weekend.

A 62-year-old woman was sitting on a bench in the 500 block of Main Street around 7:45 p.m. Sunday when four girls, age14 to 17, attempted to rob her and assaulted her, according to a police news release issued Monday.

Through their investigation, officers learned the suspects had approached the victim and tried to steal her cellphone. When they weren't able to steal the device, the suspects threw the woman to the ground and assaulted her, police said.

The teens left the scene but returnedand continued to assault the woman, then fledthe area with some of her possessions before officers arrived, according to police.

The woman was assisted by a passerby. She sustained minor upper-body injuries but didn't require medical attention, according to police.

Officers located and arrested the four suspects nearby. The victim and suspects were not previously known to one another, according to police.

One 14-year-old and two 16-year-olds are facing a robbery charge. A 17-year-old is facing four charges, including robbery and two counts of failing to comply with conditions of a court-ordered undertaking.

The 17-year-old was taken into custody, while the other three were released on undertakings, according to police.
