Brossard dog attack victim undergoes surgery

An eight-year-old girl is still in hospital recovering after she was attacked by a dog in a Brossard park yesterday.

An eight-year-old girl is still in hospitalrecovering after she was attacked by a dog in a Brossard park yesterday.

The girl was playing in the park with her mother Sunday afternoon when the dog jumped on her, Longueuil police said.

The child suffered injuries to her hand, neck and face. She was taken to hospital in serious condition and underwent surgery yesterday.

Const. TommyLacroix said policearen't confirming what breed the dog is, but said it weighsaround 100 lbs.

He said police are still trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Police seized the dog after several hours of negotiation with the owner, who initially refused to surrender the animal.

"In these types of events, we have to do an evaluation of the dog to make sure they are not dangerous to other people and to make sure they have all the medicine they need,"Lacroix said.

He was later arrested on a warrant for an incident unrelated to the dog.

Police say he the owner could face charges connected to Sunday's attack.

Neighbour Louise de Tonnancourttold CBCthe man owns two dogs, and that they're often spotted running loose in the neighbourhood.

"The backyard of the house is not fenced, so the dogs sometimes can be on the street. When Iwalk with my dog, sometimes these dogs come after my dog," de Tonnancourt said.
