How to cast your vote on election day

Everything you need to know to make sure you can cast your vote in the 2013 municipal election.

Who is eligible to vote?

To be eligible to vote in the 2013 municipal elections, you must:

  • Be 18 years old on voting day.
  • Be aCanadian citizen (as of Sept.1).
  • Not be under curatorship(as of Sept.1).
  • Nothave been found guilty of an offence that is a corrupt electoral practice (as of Sept.1).

As of Sept. 1, you also must meet one of these conditions:

  • Live in the municipality and have lived in Quebec for at least six months.
  • Have been, for at least 12 month, the owner of property or occupy a business located in theterritory of a municipality.

How do I verify if I am on the list of electors?

The returning officer in your area will send verification to your residence the week of Sept. 23. You must be on the list to vote. If you are not on the list or corrections are required, you must report to the board of advisors(in Montreal) or the local returning officer.

What identification do I need to get on the list of electors?

Two pieces of identification are required:

  • One with your first and last name and your date of birth (health insurance card, hospital card, Canadian passport, birth certificate).
  • One with your first name, last name and home address (driver's licence, hydro bill, phone bill, lease, school report card, municipal tax bill).

How many candidates will I vote for?

The number of positions to be elected varies by borough and municipality. In Montreal, voters can see how many candidates they will elect by consulting the city's official document:

Where do I vote?

The location of your polling station will be included on the voting card sentto your house by the returning officer in your municipality. If you live in a municipality of less than 20,000 inhabitants, that notice is not required.
