Montreal tackles congestion with its own measures

Montreal's Mercier Bridge will reopen on September 6, said Quebec Transport Minister Sam Hamad.

The bridge was partially closed in June as a safety precaution after engineers found rust.

Ten steel gusset plates that hold together bridge beams were corroded, requiring immediate attention.

The closure had a dramatic effect on commuter traffic to and from the island.

At a news conference Friday, Hamad said barring any unforeseen events, the bridge would reopen September 6, following Labour Day.

Hamad's announcement came hours after the city of Montreal revealed its measures toease congestion on the island.

On Friday morning, Montreal mayor Grald Tremblay unveilednew measures to address gridlock.

Proposed measures include postponing or delaying previously scheduled construction, and maintaining additional public transit service.
