Montreal sewage dump: Water treatment resumes in city's east end

Lessraw waste is now being pumped into the St. Lawrence River from Montreal's sewers,as wastewater emanating from parts ofthe cityeast of Joliette Street has been routed back totreatment plants as ofFriday afternoon.

Completion of repairs to 17 kilometresof the 30-kilometresoutheast interceptor a large sewer line means that all wastewaterfrom Rivire-des-Prairiesand the municipality ofMontreal East is once again being treated, as issewage from much of the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough.

As much as eight billion litres ofuntreated sewage was expected to be pumped into the river over aseven-day period while thatmajor sewer interceptor is repaired and upgraded.

The City of Montreal issued other updates Friday. Here arethe latest:

• Southeast interceptor repair work: About 25 workers continued with repairs and inspectionsand removeddebris and sedimentfrom one of the three large sewer lines that brings effluentto the JeanR.Marcotte treatment station.
• As of 4 p.m. ET Friday, 39 of 56 steel braces had beenremoved from a pointstarting atthe Riverside wells. Work crews continued their work at the Marguerite-Bourgeois site about 1.9 kilometresfrom the exit.Structures were also removed from the Ogilvy site.
• Alepinstructure: Inspections have beencompleted.
• Work on the structures along the three-kilometresection from JolietteStreetto DicksonStreethas been completed and inspected.
• Wells Station: The rail replacement to the well forthe southern gate of the John R.Marcotte Station has been completed.
