1 dead, 1 critically injured after collision with truck in Montreal's Mile End

One of the two women struck by a cube truck while crossing Parc Avenue at Bernard Street in Mile End Tuesday afternoon has died. A witness says they'd been jaywalking.

One of the twowomen who was struckby a cube truck this afternoon in Mile End has died.

Witnesses who spoke to CBC News say that at around 2:10 p.m.,they heard tires screeching and came out of a shop to see two women lying in the middle of the street,covered in blood.

Police say the women,aged63 and 66,were struckby atruck heading northbound on Parc Avenueat the intersection of Bernard Street.

The 66-year-old woman died in hospital, police say.

One witness told CBCthe women had beenjaywalking when they were hit.

A video obtained by CBC shows a bystander rushingtowards one of thewomen lying on the ground then performingCPR on her.

The 64-year-old driver of the truckwas treated for shock. Police will meet with him later today.

Police are at the scene speaking to other witnesses,takingphotos of the truck and collecting other evidence.

Parc Avenue is closed in both directions between St-ViateurStreetand Van Horne Avenue.

This stretch of Parc Avenue has been a hotspot for pedestrian injuries, according to astudy bythe public health agency for the region of Montreal, which looked at pedestrians hurt in traffic accidentsbetween 2003 and 2012.

Many of the pedestrian accidents along Parc Avenue between 2003 and 2012 were clustered between St-Viateur and Van Horne streets. (Montreal regional public health agency. Annotated by CBC.)
