Philippe Couillard says balanced budget will mean lower taxes

Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard says once the province tables a balanced budget, Quebecers will be rewarded for their efforts.

We need to get back in balance, and again, stay in balance by spending not more than what we earn a very simple principle, Couillard told CBC News Montreal host Debra Arbec.

Couillard said the province has adopted six consecutive deficit budgets.

He added that once the books are balanced, taxpayers will get some relief.

The two benefits we want to get out of balance is, first, to continue acting on our public debt,which is quite high by North American standards. But also, to reduce income tax particularly the health tax which has been an added layer on peoples taxes in the recent years which I think has a negative economic impact.

In his interview with Arbec, Couillard also talks about public sector workers, daycare fees, and the provinces education system.
