Public transit fare to rise in Montreal

Montreal public transit fares are going up January 1, 2012.

City councillor Marvin Rotrand says a fare hike is merited because of improved service.

"What we're hearing from riders is that people don't mind paying a little bit more, if they see tangible results," said Rotrand, who is also the STM vice-chair.

New fares as of Jan. 1, 2012

• Regular monthly pass: $75.50 (2011 fare is $72.75.)
• Reduced-fare monthly pass for students, seniors: $43.75 (2011 fare is $41.)
• The cost of a single-trip ticket stays the same, at $3.
