Quebec teachers hold surprise protest in Montreal

Montreal's largest teachers' group took to the city's streets this morning to protest budget restrictions and stalled negotiations with the provincial government.

Montreal's largest teachers' grouptook to the city'sstreetsthis morning to protest against budget restrictions and stalled negotiations with the provincial government.

TheFdrationautonomedel'enseignement (FAE), which represents about a third of Quebec teachers, organized the surprise protest ahead of a union meeting.

The union's members are debating whether toproceed with a plan to holdthreeconsecutivestrike days on Dec. 9, 10 and 11.

The protestcomes after a series of rotating public sector strikes across the province. Demonstrators gathered outside Liberal offices in Old Montrealbefore marching to thePalais des congrs.

Quebec teachers have been without a contract since April.
