Animal rendering plant causing horrible smell, RDP resident says

Children in Rivire-des-Prairies can't play outside without occasionally being confronted with a stench so strong that it sends them running inside complaining of nausea. That's how one resident describes the smell from a local rendering plant.

Theo Vecera wants the Sanimax rendering plant to adopt new measures to contain the odour

'it comes into you, and the first reaction you have is you just shake your head,' said Vecera, describing the smell of the rendering plant. (CBC)

That is one of the ways Rivire-des-PrairiesresidentTheoVecera describes the effects of thesmell from arendering plant near his house.

The smell, saysVecera, is like "vomittimes ten."

Vecera lives near the Sanimax rendering plant, whichcollects and processes animals and meat by-products.He has noticed a strong odour ever sincehe moved to the area five years ago.

"There's been already a few instances when the kids are playing outside, and in the blink of an eye, they're all running inside, saying 'daddy, daddy, it feels like I'm going to throw up,'" said Vecera.

He called a community meeting to address the problem, speaking to borough councillor Manuel Guedes about possible solutions.

Guedes thinks the company should build an airtight garage and install special filters on delivery trucks to keep in the smell.

"We want Sanimax to takeinitiatives ... and to show some good faith," saidGuedes.

Vecera is organizing a door-to-door campaign to get more people involved in the issue.

Calls to Sanimax for comment were not returned.
