8 things to do to prepare for emergencies

Emergency Measures Organization officials advise that New Brunswickers should be prepared in the event of an emergency or power outage and have everything they need for at least 72 hours following a storm.

1. An emergency kit for the home and car should be prepared. An emergency kit should include food, water, batteries, battery-powered radio, first-aid supplies and special items such as prescriptions, infant formula and equipment for people with disabilities.
2. Keep a flashlight and safety light sticks handy to use instead of candles to avoid a fire hazard if there is a power outage.
3. If your neighbourhood is without power, report the outage to NB Power at 1-800-663-6272. People and pets should stay at least 10 metres away from downed power lines or polls.
4. Put home in power outage mode by turning off all lights, except one inside and one outside so crews know outside power has been restored.
5. Keep your refrigerator and freezer closed as much as possible.
6. Make sure any standby heating units are properly vented and turn it on before the house gets too cold.
7. When power has been restored, use it sparingly during the first few hours to prevent system overload.
8. Motorists should check road conditions before heading out and drive accordingly. Unnecessary travel should be limited during and immediately after a storm to allow road crews a chance to clear roads.
