A Canadian submariner who died after a fire broke out on the HMCS Chicoutimi has been honoured in an moving Remembrance Day ceremony.

Lieut. Chris Saunders grew up in the suburbs outside Saint John, New Brunswick.

Students at Harry Miller Middle School in Rothesay paid homage to Saunders in emotional ceremony Wednesday.

Many of the students didn't know Lieut. Saunders personally.

But they know of him because his mother, Debbie Sullivan, is a custodian at the school.

That connection means a lot to Becca Webster, 13, who plays in the school band.

"I felt it was an honour. Just to be involved in such a special moment with Mrs. Sullivan's life where her son passed away was just very important," she says.

Debbie Sullivan laid a memorial wreath during the ceremony.

She was also presented with the Canadian flag that flew at half-mast at Parliament Hill in honour of her son.
