Brian Gallant still unable to provide specifics on climate plans

Although the Gallant government has promised to strengthen New Brunswick's plan to deal with climate change, Premier Brian Gallant is still unable to point to specific measures the province will take.

The existing plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in New Brunswick was put forward by the former Alward government in June 2014.

"We wanted to strengthen that plan. That's exactly what we're going to do," said Gallant.

However, in a year-end interview with CBC News, Gallant was unable to point to many specific measures the province intends to take.

"We're doing efficiency projects for residential homes," he said."We're ensuring that our buildings as a government are going to be energy efficient as well."

Those measures are included in the Alward plan put forward for 2014, along with talk of reducing industrial and transportation emissions, but no specific targets are set.

Gallant said it is possible to reconcile development of the Energy East pipeline with a commitment to the environment.

"[The pipeline] is a mode of transportation for oil that is a lot more friendly to the environment when it comes to greenhouse gases than I think rail would be."

Gallant noted his government has participated in climate summits in Quebec City and Paris in recent months, and has also worked with governments in Eastern Canada and the northeastern United States to share best practices as it prepares its strategy and commitment to deal with climate change.
