730,000 contraband cigarettes seized in roadside checkstop

Police say they seized approximately 730,000 contraband cigarettes from a vehicle Thursday night at a checkstop on the TransCanada Highway near New Maryland, N.B.

RCMP say investigation is continuing

Thecontraband cigarettes were in a U-Haul trailer being pulled by a van that stopped at thecheckstopset up byRCMPTraffic Services and N.B. Commercial Vehicle Enforcement.

RCMP said a27-year-old man from Halifax, N.S. was arrested and later released. He is set to appear inFredericton Provincial Court on Jan.20,2017, to face charges related to the seizure.

The man was the only occupant of the vehicle.

RCMP said theinvestigation continues.
