Eroded Petitcodiac River trail to be fixed

The City of Moncton will close a section of its riverfront walking trail to stabilize eroding banks along the Petitcodiac River.

Dan Hicks, supervisor for the city's parks and grounds department, said the erosion is caused by the increased flow of the river sincecauseway gates opened about a year and a half ago.

"I don't know the exact figures, but a significant portion of the bank has eroded to the point where the bank is actually right up to the edge of the trail," Hicks said.

The province's Department of Supply and Services is paying for the work,but it was notknown how much it will cost.

Calls to the department by CBC News were not immediately returned.

"We've been monitoring it closely,"Hicks added, "But the trail itself is starting to destabilize as well, so [the stabilization work] couldn't come any timelier."

The section of trail being worked on will be closed from Sept. 26 until at least Oct. 15, with detours to be arranged.
