Focus of Genevieve Cormier search shifts to neighbourhood

Volunteers are trying a new tactic in their search for a missing high school student from Saint John.

On Monday, they carried posters door-to-door in Genevieve Cormier'sneighbourhood on the city's lower west side.

Cormier, 19, disappearedon Sept. 29. Police have confirmed she was last spotted in the parking lot near Boaz Restaurant and Reversing Falls.

"We are still investigating and following the tips and leads that do come forward from the public," Sgt. Jay Henderson said in an emailto CBC News.

The major crime unit is still leading the case, said Sgt. Henderson.

"We have nothing at this time to suggest foul play is involved. We are treating the file as a missing persons case," he said.

Volunteer-led search expands

Amanda Hensey, the volunteer search co-ordinator, said she hopesa canvass of the neighbourhood could shed more light on what happened to Cormier.

"Anything that may help police and help us further pinpoint Genna's last location," she said.

"We're just trying to get those thoughts togetherthat people may not remember. Last Sunday, around 4 p.m. or 4:30 p.m., if you remember seeing something, please contact policeand give them that information."

Multiple searches last week failed to turn up any new information on Cormier's disappearance. They concentrated on the hillside and woods near Reversing Falls, BayshoreBeach, and the Lancaster neighbourhood.

OnFriday a search was conductedwith assistance from the coast guard, looking along the banks of the St. John River.

Jason Cormier, the missing teen's father, said "it's been a terrible week."

"I just take it day by day My family has been good for me, and everyone else has been giving support."

Saint John police have posted photographs on the force's websiteshowing surveillance camera footage of Cormier that was taken on Sept. 29, in order to show what she was wearing when she went missing.

Cormieris described as being aboutfive feet seven inches tofive feet eight inches tall, weighing 120 pounds with a thin build.

She has long brown hairthat she wears straight, or in a ponytail. She has hazel eyes and will usually weara light amount of makeup.

Cormier has pierced ears and a black bird tattoo on her left shoulder blade.
