Fredericton police diving St. John River, searching for missing woman

The Fredericton Police Force said a black,late-model Mazda carwent off the road and onto the green.The heavily-damagedcar wasresting metres from the edge of the St. John River, but has since been removed.

A broken tree and damaged lamp post are lining the area where the car travelled from the street to the edge of the river.

The man wastaken to the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital where he wastreated for his injuries. He was subsequently released from hospital, according to the police and theysay they have spoken with him.

Police said they are still looking for an adult woman, who may have also been in the vehicle.Family members of amissing woman were at the scene Friday afternoon.They say her name is Jennifer Brewer and they don't know where she is.

Inspector Brian Ford of the Fredericton Police Force'smajor crime unit told reporters police have reason to believe there were other occupants in the vehicle at the time of the collision, and police are looking for a woman believed to have been in the vehicle when it crashed.

However, he would notconfirm the woman's identityor any other details of the case.

"We're not going to comment at this time on any aspects of the investigation," Ford said.

The police issued a photograph of a man on Friday afternoon that they were hoping to identify in connection with the crash. They now say they "have successfully identified the person of interest" theywere looking for.

The investigation into what caused the crash is ongoing.

The forensic identification team, Fredericton Police underwater recovery team, and the accident reconstruction team are all helping with the investigation.

The police shut down traffic along St. Anne's Point Drive for several hours. It wasn't until about 2 p.m. that traffic was restored in both directions.

This is the same stretch of road where three young people were killed in 2009.

The vehicle that crashed on Friday morning is only a few metres away from where the other vehicle left the road.
