Karate Kate Campbell looks to the 2020 Olympics

There will be five new sports at the 2020 Olympics and that's changing how Fredericton's Kate Campbell is looking at the next four years of her life.

There will be five new sports at the 2020 Olympicsand thatnews ischanging how Fredericton's Kate Campbell is looking at the next four years of her life.

The International Olympic Committee approved baseball and softball, skateboarding, sports climbing, surfingand Campbell's sport, karate.

"I found out when my phone blew up and died with the amount of people texting me and letting me know," said Campbell.

"It's extremely exciting and it's going to be so nice to see karate at that kind of level."

Kate Campbell is the highest ranked Canadian in the 55kg women's category. She'sranked at 21st in the world.

Now that karate has been added to the Olympics, Campbell plans toextendher career. She wants the chance to play at the highest level, but she is already anticipating some gruelling training.

"Sweat, sweat, sweat," said Campbell. "It's going to be a challenging couple of years."

Campbell will be in her early thirties by the time the next Olympics roll around, but coaches have told her that's actually ideal.

Campbell is coming off a bronze medal at an international competition in the Netherlands, as well as a silver medal at the Pan Am Games. While in Toronto for the Pan Am games, she was amazed by the national support and excitement of the competition.

"I think having experienced that and now with the possibility of it being on a world scale, I'm just extremely excited to see it all come together," said Campbell.

"Hopefully you'll see me there."
