Maine man charged with murder after shooting death in Esgenopetitj

A 47-year-old man from Maine who was the subject of an emergency alert and manhunt in northeast N.B. last week has been charged with second-degree murder.

A man fromMaine who was the subject of an emergency alert and manhunt in northeast New Brunswicklast week has been charged with second-degree murder.

Keith Maurice Martin, 47, was charged during a court appearanceSaturday.

It's alleged Martin killed 48-year-old Mark Mitchell ofEsgenopetitjFirst Nation on Sept. 5.

Martin is scheduled to appear in Miramichi provincial court on Wednesday.

A news release from RCMP doesn't mention whether he may face other charges.

RCMP Cpl. Hans Ouellettepreviously said that Neguac RCMPresponded to a report around 1:45p.m. on Thursdayfrom a person who had been shot inEsgenopetitj, also known as Burnt Church.

At the scene, police found a 48-year-old man dead and an injured man. The injured man was taken to hospital with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries.

RCMP issued an emergency alert and askedEsgenopetitj residents to remain indoors as police searched for Martin.

He was arrested in the Esgenopetitj area on Friday, just over 24 hours after police were initially called.
