Moncton tops list of highest paid councils in province

A proposed increase in salary by Moncton city council would make them the highest paid council in the province.

Moncton council passed a motion at council on Monday night that would see Mayor Dawn Arnold get a 21 per cent pay increase, with councillors pay rising over 1/3. (CBC)

A proposed increase in salary by Monctoncity council would see New Brunswick's highest-paid municipal leaders makingeven more.

Council passed a motion on Monday night that would bring them pay raises as early as January 2017.

MonctonMayor Dawn Arnold defended the pay increase.

"I spoke to a lot of people during the election campaign and I speak to people every day that go, you guys are crazy for doing what you do for that amount of money," said Arnold.

Currently, Moncton councillors earn $24,789.72, but that amount would increase to $33,494.53.

Arnold would see a pay increase of more than $14,000 to $83,736.33 per year.

Councillors would be making almost $10,000 more than the next closest in the province,Fredericton, while Arnold would be making over $20,000 more.

Before the resolution is implemented, it will have to be turned into a bylaw, then brought to council again.
