Moosehead chair mourns brother's sudden death

The 69-year-old Oland was found dead in his office Thursday in the city's uptown.

Derek Oland, Moosehead Breweries' executive chairman, was in a remote part of Labrador when his brother's death occurred.

"We are saddened by the sudden loss of our brother Richard and on behalf of our families, we extend deepest condolences to our sister-in-law Connie, our nieces Jacqueline and Lisa, and our nephew Dennis and their families," said the statement.

"Richard is being remembered kindly by many in the community and elsewhere and we truly appreciate thesewords of comfort. Like our father and mother, Richard gave a great deal of himself and his resources for the betterment of Saint John and the larger New Brunswick community. We are grateful for these and his many other contributions."

The family was initially unable to reach Derek Oland and he wasn't able to arrange transportation home until Friday.

"Our thoughts now are with Richard's family and our focus is to help them through the difficult days ahead."

Oland left behind his wife Constance of 46 years and three adult children. His funeral is scheduled for Tuesday.

Police plan to hold a press conference regarding Oland's death on Monday.

Police say autopsy results are expected back Monday, and police should be able to determine by then if the case is a homicide.
