Morningstar told RCMP 'I'm glad you guys came and got me, I was ready to kill myself'

The jury in the murder trial of Devin Morningstar heard audio from the morning he was arrested by the RCMP in connection to the murder of Baylee Wylie. The audio was from the patrol car of Const.Jonathan Savard-Repicky.

Morningstar asked when he could see his lawyer and what language he preferred to be served in among other things.

"I understand why you guys are after me," Morningstar is heard saying on the tape.

"I was going to come forward."

Morningstaralso told police that he was happy they had come to arrest him.

"I'm glad you guys came and got me, I was ready to kill myself," said Morningstar on tape.

The court also heard testimony from Codiac RCMP Const. Dave Allard, who was on site when Morningstar was arrested.

Allard, who was in street clothes at the time, responded to 206 Broadway with an order to arrest Morningstar.

The police used force to open the door and Morningstar was found in bed when he was arrested.

"Out of all the places to hide, I go under a blanket," Morningstar is heard saying on tape.

Yesterday Moncton fire chief Charles LeBlanctestified there were three fires set in the apartment whereWyliedied. Two were located on the upper level, while one was located on the main level near whereWylie'sbody was found.

"The fact that there's three fires tells me there's something criminal," saysLeBlanc.

The jury has already heard testimony that Wylie had over 200 injuries to his body and that he was dead before the fire was set in the triplex unit.

Along with Morningstar, Tyler Noel and Marissa Shephard are also charged with the first-degree murder of Wylie. Noel's case is scheduled to begin Oct. 24, 2017, while Shephard will be in court for a preliminary hearing on May 1, 2017.
