New Brunswick athletes take home 4 Pan Am medals

The Pan Am Games ended on Sunday with Canada winning 217 medals, a record for the country, with New Brunswick athletes picking up four.

Catharine Pendrel was the first New Brunswicker to climb up on the medal podium. The Harvey Station native, who won a gold medal at the 2007 Pan Am Games,won silver in mountain biking.

New Brunswick won two medals in fighting sportsduring the Pan Am Games.

Kate Campbell of Fredericton won a silvermedal in karate.

She lost a tightly-contested final match with Brazil's Valeria Kumizaki. The match was so close that the four judges were split on who won the match and the referee was the tiebreaker.

MandyBujold, who grew up inMoncton, was the gold medal athlete for New Brunswick.

She won her second Pan Am gold medal in flyweight boxing.Bujold beat Marlen Esparza of the United States in a split decision in the women's flyweight final.

The success in the combat sports also spread to the track.

Genevieve Lalonde of Moncton ran in the 3,000-metresteeplechase. She finished behind two Americans to win the bronze medal in that race.

Charles Thoms and Jamie Allan were the only New Brunswick athletes to not medal at the Pan Am Games but they were each close to the podium.

Thoms of Fredericton lost a bronze medal wrestling match. He lost toAndres Ayub of Chile in his final match in the tournament.

Allan of Saint John and his crew came in fifth in mixed lightning sailing.
