The Green Party has failed to win a seat inits firstNew Brunswick election.

The party fielded 49 candidates, six shy of a full slate. None were elected but the party picked up 4.5 per cent of the popular vote.

Party leader Jack MacDougall kept a fairly low profile throughout the campaign, choosing to focus on the racein his riding of Fredericton-Nashwaaksis.

The riding was held by Liberal T.J. Burke, but Troy Liffordpoached it for the Progressive Conservatives.

The Green Party accused the Liberals and Tories of making unrealistic promises during the election campaign.

In order to erase the province's $749-million deficit, MacDougall promised to put tolls on the Moncton-to-Fredericton highway and raise certain income taxes.

New leader

MacDougall took the helm of the provincial party in fall 2009 after working as an organizer in the Atlantic region for the federal Green Party.

He is a former top organizer within the New Brunswick Liberals and he unsuccessfully ran against Liberal Leader Shawn Graham for the party's leadership in 2002.
