Snow, freezing rain continue in parts of New Brunswick

Freezing rain and winter storm warnings continue for parts of central and northwestern New Brunswick as the storm continues into Tuesday night.

Freezing rain and winter storm warnings continue for parts of central and northwestern New Brunswick as the storm continues into Tuesday night.

Canada Post issued a red service alert and suspended delivery of mail in northern and eastern New Brunswickbecause of the weather conditions.

Environment Canada is warning of hazardous winter conditions in parts of the northwest as snow, ice pellets and freezing rain continue into Tuesday evening.

Freezing rain warnings continue for parts of central New Brunswick as well. The warning says the freezing rain will change to rain this afternoon.

"The travelling public are urged to prepare for potentially difficult driving conditions in areas of freezing rain," the national weather service said in the statement.

Felicia Murphy,spokesperson forSNC Lavalin, the company that maintains the Trans-Canada Highway between Longs Creek and the Quebec border and Route 95 from Woodstock to Houlton, Maine, said highways remain snow-packed in the north.

"Our roads from the Quebec border down to Grand Falls, a little bit further, are snow-covered and slushy. From Grand Falls to Centreville they're snow-covered and slushy."

Murphy said that as drivers get closer to Woodstock, the highway is partially snow-covered.

"So the precipitation is getting less and less as you are coming south."

Murphy said road crews are out salting and scraping the roads.

Murphy recommended drivers go slow, give themselves extra time and keep extra space between themselves and other vehicles.

Schools in northern and central New Brunswick were closed Tuesday after the snow and freezing rain swooped across the province Monday night into Tuesday.

Anglophone West, Anglophone North, Francophone Northeast and Francophone Northwest school districts were closed. As well, Francophone South schools in Fredericton,Oromocto, Baie Sainte-Anne, Miramichi,Richibucto, Rogersville, Saint Antoine and Saint Louis de Kent are closed.
