Moncton High rally attracts 100

About 100 students, alumni and community members gathered at Moncton High School Saturday morning for a rally to save the building.

About 100 students, alumni and community members gathered at Moncton High School Saturday morning for a rally to save the building.

The 75-year-old school has been empty for almost a year while the province discusses building a new school.

The school was closed in September after some steel pillars were discovered to be rusting away. Workis alsounderwayto deal with mould on the ceilings.

Several teachers haveclaimedthe condition of thebuilding has led tohealth problems.

AMoncton city councillor said the people at the rally are concerned the provincial government won't consult them about how the building will be used.

"We want the government to really look at this project and say 'It's unique, we have opportunities. We have possibilities. Let's sit down with the municipality and let's work this out,'"Paulette Theriault said.

The rally was organized by the City of Moncton's Heritage Preservation Review Board.

Theriault said the city has been told the building will be preserved.
