Chinese student dies in hospital

A 17-year-old Chinese student, who nearly drowned in Saint John over the weekend, has died from his injuries.

A 17-year-old Chinese student, who nearly drowned in Saint John over the weekend, has died from his injuries.

Jennifer Li, president of the Chinese Cultural Association of Saint John, said the boy passed away at Saint John Regional Hospital around 2 p.m. Tuesday.

He had been in critical condition in the hospital's intensive care unit since he was pulled unresponsivefrom the poolat the Canada Games Aquatic Centre on Sunday.

He had just started classes at Simonds High School last week.

Li said his parents are expected to arrive from China on Thursday.

Li, who was at the hospital Tuesday when hospital staff broke the news, said the student's host parent took the death hard.

"He was very, very sad. He was [crying]. We all cried because [he] is too young ... and he is only child in his family," said Li.

Police are continuing to investigate the death.
