Swine flu case confirmed at N.B. school

Rothesay Netherwood School outside Saint John, N.B., has confirmed one of its students had swine flu at the beginning of the school year, marking the first lab-confirmed case of the H1N1 influenza A virus at a New Brunswick school.

The headmasterof the private school in Rothesay, about 16 kilometres northeast of Saint John, said the infected student came back from summer vacation with a mild form of the flu.

"How long at the beginning of the year they were contagious, we don't know," said Paul Kitchen. "Maybe they were even past that stage."

Kitchen said that student has since recovered and is attending classes. He said health officials do not believe the student is contagious.

It's not known whether the student lives on campus.

Alex Jewett, who boards at the school, said those who live on campus were told about the case on Sunday night.

"It's just a confirmation that it actually is out there, and it's in New Brunswick, and it's probably going to be in the rest of the world," he said.

Kitchen said the school has no plans to change its swine flu protocol.
