5th suspect arrested over St. John's home invasion

Afifth person has been arrested over a home invasion in which a St. John's man was threatened with a gun in his own home, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said Monday.

The RNC said a 24-year-old man was arrested Sunday night, and will appear in provincial court on Monday on charges that include armed robbery, forcible confinement and aggravated assault.

Three men and a woman were charged over the weekend in connection with an April 13 incident, in which a 60-year-old man was attacked during a robbery in his home on MacKenzie Street, in the east end of St. John's.

Police said a woman at the house responded to a knock at the door, and that three men then forced their way into the house. The resident was treated at hospital for head injuries.

Rene Seers, 27, and Stephen Clowe, 24, were charged Saturday with break and enter, armed robbery, forcible confinement, aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.

Police also charged Regina Myers, 50, and Dean Lewis, 31, with possession of stolen property and obstruction of justice.

On Friday night, police blocked off part of Merrymeeting Road in St. John's while RNC officers searched a house there.

Const. Paul Davis would not say what the police were looking for.

"In a case like this, an obstruction of justice charge quite often relates to interfering with a police investigation or destroying evidence that could assist the police in the investigation," Davis said this weekend.
