St. John's axe-throwing business hopes to be a hit

Some on city council had an axe to grind when it came to approving the business for St. John's but after more than a year of planning axe-throwing enthusiasts have a place to play.

Some on St. John's city councilhad an axe to grind when it came to approving a proposal for a newbusinessbut, after more than a year of planning, axe-throwing enthusiasts now have a place to play.

Jack Axes Inc. is officially open for business on Water Street in downtown St. John's.

"Why wouldn'tyou open up a business where you throw axes?" owner Adrian Beaton told CBC News.

"There was nothing like this out hereso I said, 'Why not?'"

Beatonfirstgot exposed to the unique but growing sport while on a trip to Ontario.

'Really had tochange a lot of people's minds'

He said he and hisbusiness partner just had to convince city hall to let them open theaxe-throwing enterprise.

"It would have been rewarding just to open my business," Beaton said.

"We worked really, really, really hard and really had tochange a lot of people's minds and expose them to this new idea that was massive on the mainland, and clear across the country, but was new to St. John's."

Beaton saidthe cost will be $19.99 for walk-ins, $29.95 for private parties and $99.95 to join a competitive axe-throwing league that runs for seven weeks.

Jack Axes Inc. also has plans to open a bar that will soon sellQuidi Vidi products.

According to Beaton, the first league is scheduled to start in October.
