N.L. English School District manager charged with fraud

A 52-year-old man from Lewin's Cove on the Burin Peninsula has been charged with defrauding the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District.

After an internal investigation, the NL English School District (NLESD) says it has dismissed a manager for misuse of district resources.

TheRCMPsaid Friday it hascharged a52-year-oldman from Lewin's Cove on the Burin Peninsula with defrauding the NLESD.

DerekNewhookis facing 14 counts of fraud under $5,000, two counts of fraud over $5,000, and one count of breach of trust by a public officer.

The NLESDwebsitelistsNewhookas being a busing supervisor and operations manager.

The school districtwill only say that two individuals have been dismissed following allegations of fraud.

DarrinPike,NLESDCEO, told CBC News on Wednesday there are two separate investigations into two differentemployees one of whom no longer works with the school district,

"As far as we cantell right now they're not linked, but they both involved improper or inappropriate use of district fundsor district resources," said Pike.

Newhook is slated to appear in provincial court in Grand Bank June 8.

The RCMPsaidthe investigation is ongoing.
