Friday's heavy rain in Nain carries risk of flooding, says meteorologist

Nain and Natuashish may see up to 100 millimeters fall on Friday, says meteorologist.

Areas south of Nain are expected to receive a downpour of rain that could potentially cause flooding in low-lying areas.

David Neil, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, told CBC News that as of Thursday afternoon, rain in the area is light. However, it's expected to intensify ranging from 60 to 100 millimetres over Thursdaynight and through most of Friday.

Neil added that the Natuashisharea will experience heavy rainfall, possibly reaching up to 120 millimetres.

"These higher rates, especially if sustained for an extended period, don't allow time for adequate drainage," he said.

He advises residents in the area to ensure their house drainage is clear of debris or anything that could cause water to pool.

Neil says the heavy rain is expected to lighten after Friday, with only light rain persisting through Saturday.

Community is ready

"Climate change is here, no doubt about that," said AngajukKk Julius Dicker.

He says the last time they had such heavy rain was five years ago. Back then, the community was unprepared some land was washed away and houses were damaged. But this time around, they're ready, he said.

Dicker says contractors have reinforced the area with rocks and strengthened the drainage ditches.

"We're confident that it can uphold the onslaught, but that has to be seen," he said. "It's gonna be the first time testing it."

During the last storm, Dicker says, the community was caught off guard without warning, frightening many people. This time, Environment Canada has alerted community leaders in advance of the downpour and potential flooding.

He urges residents to listen to the warning and remain vigilant.

Dicker says the town has a community centre capable of sheltering and warming all residents.
