Grade 6 student named 'chief for the day' by St. John's Regional Fire Department

It was a fun and special day for a young girl from Paradise who got the red carpet treatment at the fire department because of her safety message about smoke detectors.

11-year-old Grace Fifield was named fire chief for the daybythe St. John's Regional Fire Department on Thursday.

She won the honour after submitting the winning entry in a "Don't wait, check the date, replace smoke alarms every ten years" poster contest at her elementary school.

She said it was a very exciting day.

"It was cool," saidFifield of her tour of the central fire station on Harvey Road.

"I liked seeing the different kinds of suits they use."

Full day in the spotlight

Fifield's full day of royal treatment started with going to school at Holy Family Elementary.

She was picked up at her home and driven to school by a St. John's Regional Fire Departmentfire truck.

Once she arrived, her Grade 6class received fire safety tips from fire inspector Cara Pardy. Her full agenda included meeting a couple of mayors, fire chief Jerry Peach and visiting a few fire stations.

After a day full of activities, Filfield said she would "maybe" consider becoming a firefighter in the future.
