Conception Harbour man sentenced to 9 years for armed robbery, attempted carjacking

A Conception Harbour man has been sentenced to nine years and three months in prison for robbinga St. John's bank at gunpoint and then usingthe weapon to try to take a car from an off-duty RCMP officer.

Adam Hayden, 31, was one of two men policesay carried out an armed robbery of a TD Canada Trust bank on Kelsey Drive in November 2018. Police say they demanded cash, forcibly confined a person, and assaulted two people with a knife and a shotgun.

Police say the menfired a gun while they were inside the bank. The RNC also say the men fled in a pickup truck that went off O'Leary Avenue, which was snow covered at the time.

One man, 33-year-old Travis Wade,was stopped by police but Hayden fled on foot and tried to carjack another vehicle at gun point. He didn't know one of the people in that car was an off-duty RCMP officer. The officer subdued Hayden and held him until police arrived. Neither the officer nor the car's passenger were injured.

Judge Jacqueline Brazil also convicted Hayden on anearlier shoplifting charge. Hayden's nine-year-three-month sentence includes time for that conviction.

Wade has pleaded not guilty to the six charges he faces in connection with the incident, including armed robbery, forcible confinement and assault with a weapon. He is due back in court later this year.
