Investigation into senior officers with RNC will take months longer

The investigation of senior members of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary will take several more months, says Ron MacDonald, director or Nova Scotia's Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT), which is handling the case.

MacDonald said that over the first few months,the investigation has completed one aspect of the matter which involved speaking with many witnesses.

He said the investigation is now working on resolving legal issues around the collection of relevant documentation.

MacDonald saysthe questions involved are relatively unique, so the process is taking time and thatthe analysis of that documentation, which will be carried out as efficiently as possible, will be then be somewhat lengthy to complete.

"It is important to remember that at this point we are investigating allegations," said MacDonald.

Last fall, the Department of Justice and Public Safety called SIRT after receiving a complaint about the RNC's handling of a confidential informant.

"This investigation requires an independent and thorough review of the allegations received. The goal is to ensure the public of Newfoundland and Labrador that all aspects of the matter were carefully and completely considered prior to reaching any conclusions," said MacDonald. "

When the investigation is finished, MacDonald will provide a report to Newfoundland and Labrador's Minister of Justice and Public Safety.
