Fate of Little Bay Islands unknown after close resettlement vote

Residents of Little Bay Islands will have to wait to see if they'll be able to get a resettlement package from the Newfoundland and Labrador government.

Residents of Little Bay Islands will have to wait to see if they'll be able to get a resettlement package from the Newfoundland and Labrador government.

Just 10 people voted against relocationwhile 85 residents voted yes, theDepartment of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs said in an email to CBC News.

Theresult was 89.47per cent and the threshold for relocation is 90 per cent.

"It's not going to be pleasant time in thiscommunityif the number is not there," said former mayor Perry Locke

Two years ago, the province hiked the maximumpayoutper household in relocated communities to $270,000. Previously, the amount was $100,000.

A representative from the department said "next steps will be considered after the [provincial] election."
