Metrobus warns passengers of strike

The corporation that runs the Metrobus service in the St. John's area warned its passengers Tuesday to prepare for a strike, possibly as early as Thursday.

The corporation that runs the Metrobus service in the St. John's area warned its passengers Tuesday to prepare for a strike, possibly as early as Thursday.

Metrobus Transit posted a warning on its website indicating that the union representing workers has informed the city-owned corporation that it will take a strike vote on Wednesday.

If approved, unionized drivers and other workers would off the job by early Thursday morning.

Officials with the Amalgamated Transit Union, meanwhile, have told CBC News they will be recommending that their members reject the latest offer.

The union said it has gone as far it can go through negotiations that started in June.

A strike in 2004 lasted two weeks.

Metrobus says it will not be able to maintain its service if there is a strike.
