N.L. woman making snow removal safer

A Newfoundland and Labrador woman is pleased that her campaign to protect people from snow removal trucks is achieving results.

Jeanette Holman-Price began lobbying for side guards, which run from the front wheel to the rear wheel, to be placed on trucks after her daughter was killed in 2006 by a snow-removal truck in Montreal.

The side guards are designed to prevent a pedestrian or a cyclist from sliding under a moving truck.

Last week, thetown of Portugal Cove-St. Philip's, near St. John's, received a new snow-clearing truck with side guards in place.

"My God, it's about time, isn't it wonderful that it's here?" said Holman-Price. "It's just like Christmas. It's wonderful. It's a present. They're built to save lives. I know they'll save a life."

The side guards for the truck in Portugal Cove-St Phillip's are being manufactured in the province.

The City of St. John's and the province's transportation department say they will also install side guards on some of their heavy equipment.
