Church bells across N.L. set to mark Beaumont-Hamel anniversary

On the morning of July 1, church bells will fill the air to honour one of the deadliest moments in the province's history.

On the morning of July 1, 100years sincesoldiers of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment were given the order to plungeacross the battlefield of Beaumont-Hamel, church bellsacross the province will ring out tomark that moment, one of the deadliest in Newfoundland and Labrador's history.

The Rooms has organized the Bells of Commemoration project, to begin at 8:45 a.m. NTFriday and last for approximately one minute, to serve asan auditory reminder that present-day generations still remember the First World Warsoldiers' sacrifice.

The provincial archivesis asking any and all churches with working bells to participate, and for the social media-savvy congregations, it's asking for brief smartphone videos in order to create an online gallery so people can listen to the bells no matter their location.
