Painting crew worker killed in TCH collision

A man was killed on the Trans-Canada Highway Tuesday as he was setting up road-painting signs in western Newfoundland.

The man, 41, worked with the Newfoundland and Labrador government and is believed to have died on impact, RCMP told CBC News at the scene.

A GMC Sierra pickup truck struck a truck used for road painting.

The driver and passenger in the Sierra were taken to hospital in Stephenville to be treated for injuries that police described as not life-threatening. The RCMP were waiting Tuesday afternoon for an opportunity to ask them questions.

Traffic was backed up in both directions of the TCH in the aftermath of the collision.

The accident occurred six kilometres west of Flat Bay Hill.

Minister issues statement

Transportation Minister Paul Davis issued a statement in the wake of the accident.

"We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of this incident involving employees of the Department of Transportation and Works," Davis said.

"The incident took place on the TCH as crews were working in the area. Tragically, this has claimed the life of one of our valued employees. I extend sincere condolences to his family and friends and to all of our employees and their families."

Davis noted that his department is "fully cooperating with all authorities conducting investigations."
