It's something locals take for granted, but people who have moved to St. John's from warmer countries are experiencing the thrill of sliding.

They've lived through war and natural disasters, but a St. John's winter is a new experience for a group of newcomers to the city.

On Friday, they got a chance to race down the snowy slopes of Pippy Park on toboggans and plastic slides a first for many.

"It's very easy and it's fun. We go and I think it's dangerous, I'm scared but no, I don't worry," said Gabur Vo.

"I feel my heartlooks like I'm 25yearsold.Ifeel Iam young,but I am 61yearsold."

Lorenca Garcia is from theDominican Republic.

"Flying on the ice in the snow, it's nice, I feel so comfortable here, the people are so nice," she said.

The fun afternoon was organized by the Association for New Canadians.

"We like to get them out to show them that in Canada you don't have to stay indoors because its snowing," said the ANC'sFrankGough.
