Rise in red alerts prompts rally of first responders

Firefighters joined paramedics for a rally in St. John's on Thursday, in response to a recent increase in red alerts.

Red alerts are cases in which ambulances aren't available to attend an emergency.

Firefighters say this is happening because Eastern Health is short-staffed.

Doug Cadigan, president of the firefighter's union, says that'sa safety concern for the public and emergency responders.

"We have incidents such as large fires.The health sciences paramedics are automatically called and use an ambulance on standby," said Cadigan.

"And if they were unavailable to respond then the people we serve from that end and our own members may not get the treatment they need if there's an emergency at one of these scenes."

Paramedics say there are not enough of them to answer all of the calls that come in.
