The fitness regime used by soldiers in the First World War has been adapted for school kids today.

The Rooms in St. John's is challenging students across the province to train like soldiers in the First World War.

The First World War Physical Training Challenge was designed as a way for Kindergarten to Grade 9 students to connect with history.

"It's just meant to introduce students to the Newfoundland Regiment and the process of training and the history behind the First World War," saidGillian Davidge, manager of education and public programming at The Rooms.

This First World War training manual inspired The Rooms to create the challenge. (The Rooms)

Davidge, who acts as drill sergeant, said the challenge was inspired by a wartime training manual and archival film footage.

Students and teachers can access the program through The Room's website.

Davidge said there's even an opportunity for one school to win $1,000 in gym equipment.

The challenge is one of many initiatives organized by The Rooms to commemorate the upcoming 100th anniversary of Beaumont-Hamel.
