Scott Simms keeps seat in Coast of Bays-Central-Notre Dame

Liberal incumbent Scott Simms will continue to represent Newfoundland and Labrador in Ottawa in the riding of Coast of Bays-Central-Notre Dame.

Former N.L. cabinet minister Kevin O'Brien garners 18.3 per cent of vote

Liberal incumbent Scott Simms will continue to representNewfoundland and Labrador in Ottawa as the MP for the newly formedriding ofCoast ofBays-Central-NotreDame.

Simmsswept the riding Monday night, beating out former provincial cabinet minister Kevin O'Brien,NDP candidate Claudette Menchenton and Green Party candidate Elizabeth Perry.

Simmstook26,572votes, whileO'Brien was far behind with6,503 votes. Menchenton garnered 2,184 and Perry claimed 271 votes.

"We couldn't overcome the anti-Harper issue in Newfoundland and Labrador," said veteran politician O'Brien.

"I ran for a need and that was the need to have somebody on the government side if the Conservatives were to form government."

Theriding ofCoast of Bays-Central-Notre Dame encompasses a large portion of the riding ofBonavista-Gander-GrandFalls-Windsor, which washeld by Simmsfor nearly 11 years.
