Reaction to news Newfoundland and Labrador MP Seamus O'Regan has entered into a program for alcohol was swift, after the former broadcaster publicly announced he would be seeking treatment.

O'Regan, who co-hosted CTV's Canada AM for nearly a decade, took to Twitter Sunday to announce he has entered into a "wellness program" to "adopt an alcohol-free lifestyle."

Prime Minister JustinTrudeau issued a statement on Twitter later Sunday, saying, "My thoughts are with my friendand colleague @SeamusORegan tonight, and he has my full support."

Others also wished O'Regan well, including friends, fellow politicians and constituents.

O'Regan was elected as MP for St. John's South-Mount Pearl, beating out incumbentRyan Cleary, who ran for the NDP.

Meanwhile, O'Regan'sconstituency assistant told CBC News that all constituency matters are moving forward.

The last tweet in a series of four from O'Regan indicated he would be returning to his duties as MP prior to Parliament sitting on Jan. 25.
