Police were at Springdale Street home, but left minutes before shooting

A teenager arrested in connection with a shooting in downtown St. John's is now facing a charge of attempted murder, police say.

Officers visited a home at 74 Springdale Street in St. John's on Jan. 30, and left shortly before a shooting that led to attempted murder charges, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary confirmed Tuesday.

Const. Geoff Higdon said officers responded following a 911 hang-up call from the residence, and "we were called back a short time later that a male has been shot."

Higdon confirmed that information while announcing that a teenager arrested in connection with incident is now facing a chargeof attempted murder.

Higdon would not provide any further details of what happened during the RNC's first visit to the house, saying only that the two responses are "tightly connected."

The teen was first charged with careless use of a firearm and unauthorized possession of a firearm a shotgun.

In addition to attempted murder, heis now also charged with forcible confinement, aggravated assault, pointing a firearm and uttering threats.

The youth appeared in youthcourt Tuesday morning and will remain in custody until his next appearance Feb. 14.

That now brings to four the number of people charged with attempted murder in connection with the shooting of a 21-year-old man, who remains in hospital in serious condition, police said.

Rebecca Murphy, who turned 19 on Tuesday,MabelStanley, 42, and HaroldNoftall, 55, allappeared in provincial court Tuesday afternoon.

The three are also all charged with aggravated assault and public mischief for trying to divert suspicion.

Noftalland Stanley are also charged with forcible of confinement.Noftallalso facesthree other charges: unlawfully possessing a firearm, pointing a firearm, and a breach of probation.

Noftalland Stanley were held in custody and are scheduled to appear in court again Feb. 22. Murphy was also held in custody and is due back in court Wednesday.

Higdonsaid the four accused and the injured manlived within close proximity to one another, and the incident was not a random act of violence.
