Two twin otter planes filledwith stray dogs flew from Natuashish to Happy Valley-Goose Bay on Thursday.

An overpopulation of dogs has long been a burden for the community. With the assistance of community residents, a half-dozen SPCA volunteers herdedsome of the animals and airlifted them out.

Volunteer Michelle Earle said she was surprised at how easily the dogs came to them.

"You see one dog, you jump out of the truck, you give it some treats, trying to get it around you ... you whistle at it, and next thing you know you have 10 dogs around you," said Earle.

About 45 dogs, some of them pregnant, were rounded up.

The dogs are still only halfway to their new homes. They will stay with foster families in Happy Valley-Goose Bay until Saturday morning, and then will be airlifted to Nova Scotia.Litters 'n Critters Animal Rescue will help out in the effort to securefoster homes in Halifax.

"These dogs, they have a personality that totally grabs you. And I kind of pity the people who are fostering them right now, because I don't know how they're going to let them go," said Earle.
